How to Measure a Lampshade

How to Measure a Lampshade

A Simple Guide to Finding the Perfect Fit

Choosing the right lampshade is about more than finding the correct size - it's about creating balance between the lamp base, the shade and the light itself.

Whether you're replacing an existing lampshade or selecting one for a new lamp, a few simple measurements will help you achieve a beautifully proportioned result. In this guide, we'll show you exactly what to measure and how to choose the right shape and size for your space.

Step 1 - Identify Your Lampshade Shape

Before measuring, identify the shape of your current shade. Common shapes include:

  • Drum
  • Empire
  • Coolie
  • Square
  • Rectangle
  • Oval

Different shapes are measured slightly differently, but the same three dimensions always apply.

Step 2 - Measure Three Simple Dimensions

Using a tape measure, take the following three measurements:

Top Diameter

Measure across the widest part of the top opening.

Bottom Diameter

Measure across the widest part of the bottom opening.

Height

Measure vertically from the top edge to the bottom edge. For tapered shades, the vertical height is generally sufficient for ordering - keep your measurements consistent with the dimensions listed on each product page.

Step 3 - Measure Your Lamp Base

To ensure a well-proportioned result, also measure your lamp base:

  • Height from the bottom of the lamp to the bottom of the bulb holder.
  • Widest point of the base.

Step 4 - Choosing the Right Size

A few simple rules to guide your choice:

  • The shade should be wider than the widest part of the lamp base.
  • The bottom diameter should feel proportionate to the overall lamp height.
  • The bulb holder should remain hidden once the shade is fitted.
  • The shade should complement the lamp base — neither overpowering it nor disappearing into it.
